Before the mission, a calamity strikes at Solaris HQ when a dark, shapeless mass literally attacks the facility. Mizuki arrives in time to face this entity as it addresses her as Marianas, also declaring that she is no longer needed before dispersing. The good news is, nobody was harmed and there was little in the way of material damage. Unfortunately, doctors on-duty confirm that somehow the child growing inside of Salanshiel has vanished. Mizuki and her parents all realize what it is though: the Great Black Void, somehow resurrected, and kidnapping Zankuro for malevolent reasons.

The location of the Void is the same as it once was, the empty focii in the Earth's orbit around the Sun, and a rescue mission is planned to go straight into the Void, rescue Zankuro, and see what can be done about putting the Void under for good this time. And as the team nears the Void's location, it calls out to Mizuki and the others, mocking Mizuki's belief that it had been fully destroyed in the past. As it explains, "No matter how bright a light may shine, no matter how much darkness it dispels, it will always cast a shadow." The conflict between Sol and Void had not ended, it had merely been put on hold until the Void's strength had returned. And the time for the war to resume had finally come.

The Void spreads suddenly, enveloping the shuttle entirely before conjuring up mecha-sized gray phantoms of its previous "champions" (Queen Maliasma, Lord Nova, Admiral Blackheart, Terra Complete, Hecate, Queen Mab, Marquis Phobia, Ptolomeioh, Count Warlock, and Algoz) to try to kill everyone with, describing them as "fitting executioners" for killing Mizuki. Any and all demands for Zankuro will be simply brushed aside, the Void saying that they can worry about rescuing him if they can survive.

Functionally the ten Phantoms are identical, not particularly fast, but with powerful melee abilities and generic Void energy blasts, and not liable to go down in just one hit unless it's a fairly strong one. Still, they are mooks, and it shouldn't take long for the ten to be whittled down to around half, and once an opening presents itself, the DuskBird gets impaled by a black chain. Another machine appears within the darkness, the Void mocking her while introducing us to Zankuro, its new host. The time for proxies is over, it declares; with Zankuro's body and the BlackNight it will do what its previous creations could not.

In direct combat the BlackNight is incredibly fast, and in addition to its sword it can manifest eight wins of varying size, shape, and length which damage on contact. But most notably, the Void can summon forth even more Phantoms to replace the ones lost... though for the sake of pacing these can be treated more like "attacks" than "mooks" so focus can stay on the BlackNight.

Damage done to the BlackNight is quickly repaired, but when it's damaged severely enough in a short enough span of time, a strange relic is exposed that does not match the rest of the machine.  In fact, any kind of analysis would identify it as being another component of the Discovery, something the Void itself will corroborates on after a brief pause, before telling of its origin and of the Primeval Dusk.

The Dusk were just one of the many races who participated in the first war against the Lady, beings of darkness, noble and powerful but nevertheless exterminated over the course of the war. And yet, in the aftermath something lingered. Perhaps a byproduct of the Discovery component, perhaps some ability of the race, or perhaps some other force was the cause, but this lingering presence grew, eventually becoming the Great Black Void.  It blames the death of the Primeval Dusk on the surviving races, which spurred its resolve to war against those born of light, and thus bring about the battles of the past.  And regardless of how or if it contributed to the Void's origin, the relic still provided it with power and the means to replenish its strength and forces time and time again.

Mizuki (and presumably anyone else with a sense of what this canon is about) will be able to see this for what it ultimately is though: petty jealousy, mixed with a disposition towards conflict but being denied the chance to continue fighting the Lady... and in turn taking it out on those that don't deserve it.

The good news is exposing the Discovery component slows the BlackNight's regeneration considerably, the Void adjusting tactics to try to protect the exposed relic.  And as the damage piles up further, the surrounding blackness will begin to break away as well... before the Void will try to turn and escape, not getting far before the BlackNight suddenly stops and Zankuro calls out for everyone to tear out the relic.

Separated from the relic at long last, the Void mostly dissipates and all that remains  are scant, black whisps.  Mizuki takes the chance to snatch it up, poised to crush it, but the remnant defiantly states that without its power, Zankuro will die. And even if it were destroyed, it would return one day anyways.

Mizuki still calls the Void's bluff twice-over.  True, any light will create shadows, but to erase darkness one merely needs to subsume it with a greater, more powerful one.  And even though they were all creations of the Void, mere fragments, Mizuki and her parents have still grown to surpass it .  That's why the Void had to resort to kidnapping an unborn child to be the means of its revenge, it was the only Abyssian left the Void was stronger than.  But even that had changed seeing as how Zankuro had held the BlackNight back so that everyone could catch up to it.  The Void needed its creations more than its creations needed it.  And after another brief moment, the Void finally concedes and accepts its defeat... finally addressing Mizuki by her chosen name and recognizing her as being a worthy successor of the Primeval Dusk before she crushes it.

The Void is finally, decisively destroyed and Zankuro is alive and doing fine. Sorta, at least. His age was artificially accelerated, which will be no small amount of tears shed for his parents once more missing out on early-years parenting. On the plus side, Mizuki and co. will be freed from their mild allergy to sunlight and their more serious aversion to food born from it.

Unfortunately, turns out Mizuki still ends up finding the taste of all that food she's been missing out on disgusting anyways. Oh well!
